Become a Mental Health First Aider!

Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and substance use challenges, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. MHFA teaches about recovery being possible for individuals experiencing these challenges.

As a Certified MHFA Instructor, the following courses are offered to groups of five or more:

Adult Mental Health First Aid:

Mental Health First Aid for Adults teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. Topics covered include Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis, and Substance Use Disorders.

Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education:

Prepare your campus to address mental health and substance use challenges commonly experienced in higher education settings. Developed by people with lived experience of mental health challenges and professionals, this course teaches early intervention techniques and improves mental health literacy to help you understand, identify and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges.

Mental Health First Aid for Older Adults:

Older Adults experience mental health challenges about the same rate as the general public. According to the Massachusetts Association for Mental Health, one in four older adults has a mental health issue. MHFA for Older Adults uses real-world examples to train participants in how to engage with older adults who may have mental health and substance use challenges. It covers the risk and protective factors unique to this community and offers community, regional and national mental health resources for older adults and their caregivers.

Mental Health First Aid for Corrections Professionals:

MHFA for Corrections Professionals equips staff with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand and respond to mental health and substance use challenges in their peers. By providing the necessary support and resources, correctional facilities can help staff members cope with the challenges they face, reduce burnout and promote a positive work environment that ultimately benefits both staff and the individuals they serve.

Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety:

MHFA for Public Safety teaches the skills needed to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. This evidence-based training promotes open dialogue, reduces stigma and encourages officers to seek support when needed. Offering MHFA for Public Safety can help create a healthier, more resilient and productive department.
